ONE: CHECK IF YOU QUALIFY FOR FINANCIAL SUPPORT

You may be eligible for financial support to help pay your energy bill.

In the UK there’s a range of benefits for those in need. The .GOV website is where you can find out if you qualify.

Benefits include:
• Cold Weather Payment
• Warm Home Discount Scheme
• Winter Fuel Payment
• National Concessionary Fuel Scheme

TWO: CENTRAL HEATING

Take a few minutes to work out when the best time is to have the central heating on.

Is the family at home when it’s on?

Do you need hot water when it’s heated?

Managing the central heating can help reduce the energy bill by limiting the number of times it comes on a day.

THREE: HEAVY CURTAINS

If you’ve got large windows, one way to keep the heat in is to invest in some heavy curtains.

You might even find something suitable at a charity shop.

FOUR: DRAFT STOPPERS

Draft stoppers are another way to retain the heat.

Be sure to air out rooms during the day. Buildings need circulation, and you don’t want to encourage surface damp.

FIVE: BED HEATER / ELECTRIC BLANKET

During the cold winter nights, you could stay warm without the central heating on.

The most important place to heat is your bed.

A bed heater uses very little energy, can be purchased on a budget, and will keep you warm on the coldest of winter nights.
SIX: WEAR A HAT

As with any old fashioned, common sense idea, scientist have been working hard to disprove it.

Myth or not, I feel the difference when I’m wearing a hat.

My head is warmer.

If you’re cold at home, put a hat on! I’m sure it will help retain body-heat.

SEVEN: WEAR MORE

Many of us are still wearing summer clothes, deep into the winter months.

Wearing an extra t-shirt, or putting on a warm jumper is a great way to save money on the electric bill.

EIGHT: THERMAL MUG TO KEEP TEA WARM

Save on kettle boiling costs by using a thermal mug.

They do keep teas warmer for longer, so you won’t have to put the kettle on again if it sits a short while.

NINE: GET A SMALL HOT WATER BOTTLE

We work from home, and our small hot water bottle is used throughout the winter months.

Whenever we make a tea, we pour what’s left over into the hot water bottle.

It’s a great frugal way to save money by limiting waste.

TEN: GET MOVING

A good way to warm up a human body, is to move the human body.

A light workout can get the blood circulating, and warm you up from the inside, out.

(BONUS) ELEVEN:

Hibernate.
