15 Small Business Ideas
To Escape The Rat Race
I remember not really having the time to explore business ideas.
With that in mind, I’ve created this list of potential small business ideas to escape the rat race.
Before I start, I have to point out I’m not a business adviser. I’m a blogger offering my opinion. Please seek a professional, should you require one.
Back to it.
Small Business Ideas
To Quit The Day Job
For this list I’ve applied three simple rules:
1. If successful, the small business should be able to pay the bills
2. The business owner shouldn’t have to go into an office, have a boss or interact with ‘colleagues’
3. The business owner should have self autonomy to prioritise daily business activities
Some of these small business ideas will require a skill, and/or equipment.
Most of these can be started for under £100 -not including any insurance or official qualifications you might need.
Finally, these are all businesses you could do on the side, and build up, while still working the day job.
15 Small Business Ideas
For this small business, you’d need gardening tools and a vehicle to get about.
You could list yourself in the local paper, advertise on social media, maybe create a free one page website, and drop leaflets door-to-door.
If you enjoy DIY, why not help those who don’t – or those that can’t?
Again, you could list yourself in the local paper, or local Facebook groups.
You’d need tools, but if you like DIY, you’ll already have some.
Life is full of special occasions, and people need somebody who’s not there enjoying themselves to take the pictures.
I’m sure there’s a lot more to it! If you enjoy photography and have the equipment already, trying it professionally could make sense.
FOUR: DOG WALKER / DOG SITTER
Dogs are expensive and needy.
I have a dog and have considered using a dog carer for holidays.
Dog owners want to know their dogs are happy and cared for.
If you have the temperament, space, and time maybe this would be a perfect small business for you.
FIVE: CATALOGUE SALES
There are a few large catalogue/mail order companies, easily found on the internet. You simply drop off catalogues and collect orders, taking a commission on the orders made.
On paper, this appears to be viable option to earn an income.
While you would have self autonomy, there does appear to be a management structure, as you’d expect.
SIX: LIVE PERFORMER
Can you play an instrument? How do you feel about playing in a pub, or at parties?
Maybe you know magic tricks, or some other skill that can be monetised.
Depending on the activity, you could also do this on YouTube.
SEVEN: MARKET STALL SELLER
If you’ve got a local market, maybe you could get a stall.
You’d need to look into supplies though.
This is one of the small business ideas that would need a little more financing.
People want, and need, to learn. And you could teach them.
I’m not talking about Harvard, more-so Guitar, English, Painting etc.

NINE: AFFILIATE SELLER
I have a post on Making Money Online, and this is part of it.
You don’t need a website to be an affiliate seller.
But you do need to dig into it. To learn how it works and what’s allowed.
TEN: CRAFTS SELLER ON ETSY
Etsy is full of handmade items that you can purchase. Why not be one of the people selling?
Even if you didn’t want to sell art, you could sell craft supplies.
Check out my 21 Crafts To Make And Sell for more ideas.
ELEVEN: GRAPHIC DESIGNER
If you have design skills, then maybe you could offer them remotely.
Fiverr, and sites like it, are great for getting work.
You could also work for local companies.
TWELVE: BED AND BREAKFAST OR RENT A ROOM
Do you have a spare room(s)?
You could rent it out, either as a standard rent, or a bed and breakfast.
The UK government lets you rent out a room and earn up to £7,500 tax free. The rules can be found at the .gov website.
THIRTEEN: WEB DESIGNER
Just like the graphic designer, you could hire out your skills remotely.
If you have the ability to create websites, you could start your own small business.
FOURTEEN: REMOTE WHOLESALER (BUY & SELL)
A number of large internet wholesalers provide the opportunity for you to become a seller of their product.
The way it works is, you purchase a large portion of stock from them at a reduced price. Then you sell on the stock.
This is one of the small business ideas that would need financing.
OK, I’m a blogger and this website isn’t paying the bills.
But our online business benefits from blogging.
I have a number of blogs, and encourage friends and family to give it ago.
Generally speaking, the internet is about volume. Blogging is a simple way to monetise that fact.
Of course, it takes time and effort to grow a blog.
